Estranged wife removing mangalsutra means mental cruelty for husband: Madras HC

The Madras High Court granted divorce to a man after observing that his wife caused ‘mental cruelty of the highest order’ to him by removing her ‘Thali’ (Mangalsutra) in Tamil Nadu’s Erode. The court said that wearing of mangalsutra is an essential ritual of the marriage ceremony and removing it causes ‘agony and hurts the sentiments of the respondent’ (husband).
