Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate India's first water metro service in Kochi, Kerala on April 25.
The Kochi Water Metro will start sailing on two routes - High Court to Vypin and Vyttila to Kakkanad on the backwaters.
There will be eight electric-hybrid boats operating on the two routes. The travel time on the two routes is an estimated 15-25 minutes one way.
The fare for the routes are nominal at Rs 20 on HC-Vypin route and Rs 30 on Vyttila-Kakkanad route on a single journey.
Operations on HC-Vypin route will start on April 26 and operations on the Vyttila-Kakkanad route will begin on April 27.
This one-of-a-kind transport system is expected to boost toursim, reduce pollution, ease congestion and provide safe and affordable means of travel.
Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan said that commuters can book tickets digitally or use their "Kochi One" cards.
The Kochi Water Metro project plans to develop 15 routes connecting 10 islands.
These modern boats will replace the ferry services operated by Kerala Water Transport Department.
