Extreme cold gripped parts of Russia on December 5, as temperatures in Siberia plunged to -58 degrees Celsius (-72 degrees Fahrenheit).

Yakutsk, a city located about 5,000 km east of Moscow and known as one of the coldest in the world, was covered in freezing clouds and fog.

Due to the extreme temperatures, locals found it necessary to wear two pairs of gloves and dress in multiple layers to combat the cold.

In Oymyakon, Sakha, the temperature hit minus 58 degrees Celsius, feeling like minus 63 degrees Celsius with humidity and wind.

Overnight, temperatures in certain areas of the Sakha Republic in northeastern Siberia, dropped below -55 degrees. It is an extensive region slightly smaller than India.

In Yakutsk's market, fish were sold deep-frozen in numerous boxes. The salespeople, combating the cold, wore large fur hats for warmth.
