Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra experienced rainfall on Sunday evening as Cyclone Biparjoy intensified into a cyclonic storm in the Arabian Sea.

Skymet Weather reported that strong winds and high waves were expected along the Maharashtra and Gujarat coasts.

Cyclone Biparjoy developed into an extremely severe cyclonic storm and was moving at a speed of 9 kmph.

The cyclonic storm was located around 580 km west southwest of Mumbai, 480 km south-southwest of Porbandar and 780 km south of Karachi.

Mumbai received rainfall in the late hours of Sunday and Monday morning, providing relief from the scorching heat and humidity.

Prior to the rainfall, the city had recorded its hottest June day in a decade, with a temperature of 38.5 degrees Celsius.

Chaos ensued at Mumbai airport with flight delays and cancellations due to the weather conditions caused by Cyclone Biparjoy.

According to the Indian Met Department (IMD), isolated areas in Thane, Raigad, Mumbai, and Palghar are expected to receive moderate spells of rain.

The strong winds affected air quality and visibility in Mumbai, and high tides and waves surprised tourists.

Cyclone Biparjoy is predicted to make landfall on the Gujarat and Pakistan coasts on Thursday, with heavy rainfall and wind speeds up to 150 kmph expected between June 13 and 15.

The districts of Kutch, Jamnagar, Morbi, Gir, Devbhumi Dwarka, and Porbandar are likely to be impacted.

But for now, the cyclonic activities have brought temporary respite from the heat and humidity that has plagued Mumbaikers this summer.
