Built by Bharat Earth Movers Limited at the cost of Rs 12,600 crore, the new Mumbai Metro lines, 2A and 7, were inaugurated by PM Modi.
The 18.6 km long Yellow line 2A connects Dahisar E and DN Nagar and the 16.5 km long Red line 7 connects Andheri East and Dahisar E.

The Metro trains on these two lines will run on the 35-km elevated corridor stretch, with 22 rakes, and 30 elevated stations in total.

Although initially drivers will be in the coaches, it is designed to be driverless, with an ultra modern signalling system.

They are expected to carry 3-4 lakh passengers daily, and run on a frequency of one train every 10 minutes.

The Metro lines aim to reduce traffic and decrease the travel time by 30-50%, and to serve at least 10 lakh daily commuters by 2031.

There will be a separate coach for women passengers. Each station will have CCTV cameras, security systems and women security guards.

Coaches will also be equipped with vertical bike stands for commuters who carry their bikes on the train.

The fare for a distance of 3-12 km will be ₹20, ₹30 for 12-18 km and ₹50 for 24-30 km.

The Mumbai Metro is set to open to the public from 4pm on January 20.
