Oscar-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio praised the Assam govt for its efforts that ensured zero poaching of the one-horned rhinoceros in 2022.

After DiCaprio's applause, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma extended an invitation to the actor to visit the Kaziranga National Park.

One-horned rhinos

In a first since 1977, no rhinos were poached last year from Kaziranga, the world's largest reserve of the endangered great one-horned rhinoceros.

No more poaching

Poachers killed more than 190 rhinos in Assam between 2000 and 2021, but none was killed last year, according to data shared by Assam Police.

Kaziranga National Park is a World Heritage Site and is home to large breeding populations of elephants, wild water buffalo, and swamp deer.

Kaziranga was declared a Tiger Reserve in 2006. It has the highest density of tigers in the world (1 per 5 sqkm), and a population of 118.

home to elephants

Kaziranga also has one of the largest elephant populations and hosts a yearly festival for the conservation and protection of the Asiatic elephant.
