The airport is spread across 775 acres.
The airport will boost connectivity and accessibility of Tier 2 cities in Karnataka like Shivamogga and the Malnad region.
The lotus-shaped airport in Shivamogga is likely to be named after 20th-century Kannada poet Kuvempu.
During an address, PM Modi said he's witnessing the progress of people wearing 'hawai chappals ’travelling in hawai jahaz’, lauding India's aviation sector.
PM Modi walked hand-in-hand with former Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa while inspecting the airport. It is also BSY's 80th birthday.
