While 2017 has been a not-so-good year for Bollywood, Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif-starrer Tiger Zinda Hai has blessed 2018, slaying box-office records one by one.
A slump was expected in the collections owing to the Maharashtra bandh on Wednesday. But the collections of the spy movie, directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, after 13 days, including the bandh day, stunned the analysts. It was released on December 22 in a no-holiday week. It clocked Rs 286.46 crore as on January 3.
Currently, it is pacing up to reach the Rs 300 crore-club. If we interpret all these signs carefully, the movie will smash a number of records and will soon be in a race with SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali 2: The Conclusion. The dubbed Hindi version of the Telugu movie collected Rs 510.98 crore, an all-time high in the domestic market.

The movie is also a great comeback for Salman Khan after his Tubelight (2017) fell flat. Unlike recent Salman movies, which have faced flak from critics for non-existent storylines, TZH has the perfect combination of patriotism and a message of peace and love a la Aman ki Asha.
Highest first-day grosser
Bollywood is quite superstitious about first-day collections. It believes that the morning shows the day. Analysts, too, keep an eye on the first day numbers as it sets the trend. Also a good show on Friday is generally followed by a moderate first weekend. “Good” and “Moderate” will be understatements for Tiger Zinda Hai’s initial collections. It earned Rs 34.10 crore on the first day in India, which makes it the highest first-day grosser among Hindi films. It has also recorded the biggest ever single day collection by a Bollywood film with its Sunday collection of Rs 45.53 crore.
Breaking into the Rs 100 crore club in 3 days
There was a time, not long ago, when entering the 100-crore club was a matter of pride for Bollywood movies. In 2008, Ghajni started the 100-crore club, and the 200-crore club was initiated in a year by 3 Idiots (2009).
The target was upped by Aamir Khan-starrer PK (2014), and Salman Khan-starrer Bajrangi Bhaijan (2015). The two Khans carried forward the new trend. In 2016, Sultan, another Salman Khan movie, and Dangal, another Aamir Khan movie, crossed the 300 crore-mark.
And there has been no end to the blockbusting success. Now the race is to cross the 100-crore mark as early as possible. And Tiger Zinda Hai achieved it within three days of release.
International appeal
According to reports, Tiger Zinda Hai raked in Rs 423 crore worldwide in just 10 days to become the second highest worldwide grosser of the year behind Baahubali 2: The Conclusion.

Highest grosser in Fiji
The movie has already become the highest Bollywood grosser in Fiji, which is considered as a promising market for Bollywood flicks. In this record, it has beaten Dangal (2016), Golmaal Again (2017), Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015) and Dilwale (2015).

Big budget edge
The timing of the release, too, played a vital role. It was the same thing that worked for Dangal last year (December 23, 2016). Though there was no holiday in the week TZH was released, it reaped the benefit of the festive season. The only other Bollywood movie running at that time was Fukrey Returns (December 8).
In this month, too, TZH is supposed to do brisk business as there is no big-budget movie queued for release.
