Nice attack: Terror strikes France again. Here's what you need to know

At least 84 people were killed and many others injured in Nice, France when a suspected terrorist drove a lorry loaded with weapons and hand grenades into a crowd watching Bastille Day celebrations.

Here's what we know:

1. The driver was shot dead by the police after rampaging on for nearly one kilometre. He was a 31-year-old French citizen born in Tunisia and is said to be known to the police.

2. Head of the local region, Christian Estrosi, said guns and "larger weapons" were found in the truck.

3. French President François Hollande announced that France's state of emergency - due to end July 26 - would be extended by an additional three months.

4. He condemned the attack as a "monstrosity," and said there could be no doubt that it was an act of terror.

5. "France as a whole is under the threat of Islamic terrorism," he said. "We have to demonstrate absolute vigilance and show determination that is unfailing. Nothing will lead us to give in to our will to fight against terrorism," the French leader concluded.

6. French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said, "The identification of the criminal is in progress." He refused to confirm reports that an ID card was found after police shot the truck driver dead.
