Met Gala 2018: A look at the worst and best dressed
Here are the best and worst dressed.
It’s that time of the year when Hollywood and American music “royalty” throw caution to the wind and dress up for the most glamorous fancy dress party ever – the Met Gala held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
This year’s theme was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”, and most celebs played with the idea quite literally – Christian inspired costumes that hinged on being somewhat offensive to the religiously inclined. However, purely fashionable-speaking, here’s the list of the best and worst dressed at the do:
1. Curtain call
It appears that Sarah Jessica Parker’s high-fashion days from Sex and the Cityare well behind her, as she has given one miss after the other on the Met Gala red carpet. This year was no different, as she wore what looked like a dress made of her curtain to the party (Gone With The Wind, anyone?).
Of course, the real fault should be bestowed upon her stylist and Dolce & Gabbana, who made the tackiness that they call a gown in the first place. The elaborate headgear by Philip Treacy was also completely lost on the busy outfit, not the mention the unnecessary addition of roses to her hair. A classic case of trying too hard.
2. Fallen angel
I can only wonder how inspired Katy Perry was by the Victoria’s Secret angels that she decided to wear such a massive set of feathered wings on her back. Dramatic, yes, but not at the cost of her and others’ lives, with her nearly knocking down her stylist while posing for the pappz.
Also, how she got in between doors without breaking a few artworks is anyone’s guess. As for the custom Atelier Versace dress, it could have worked, but the golden boots were just overkill. Fallen from grace, perhaps?
3. Golden goof-up
Why look like anything heavenly when you can basically resemble a cross between a genie and an Oscars award?
Kim Kardashian West was her confusing best in a plunging, floor-length sequined gold gown by Versace, with two embellished crosses on the front for useless visual relief. Unimaginative at best, Kim looked like a bottle of golden paint that even Michelangelo would have rejected.
4. Historical hottie
American actress Zendaya of The Greatest Showman fame got a thumbs-up across the board for her Joan of Arc inspired custom-made Versace metallic gown.
The gown was every bit worth the attention, with its chainmail details and neck and shoulder piece, complimented with sexy, feminine details like a deep cowls neck, cut-out back and nipped-in waist. Her short red hair worn in a messy texture and easy make-up completed the look beautifully.
5. Velvet wonder
I don’t mean to be partial here, but Priyanka Chopra looked amazing in this deep maroon gown by Ralph Lauren worn with matching lipstick.
The Swarovski hooded headgear, which took 250 hours to create, is a delight to behold both technically and fashion-wise. The hair has been worn well tied back, with soft waves on the face.
It’s heartening to see the desi actress owning her fashion statements at such platforms – it’s time, though, for her to showcase Indian talent internationally.
6. Will the pope pardon?
The Vatican and religiously inclined have been fuming since Rihanna rolled out in her custom-made John Galliano gown – a situation that has arisen after decades (remember when Madonna got on their wrong side with her song “Like a Prayer” in 1989?).
Of course, while bad gal RiRi told Vogue in an interview that “It feels expensive! It would be a sin not to wear it!”, her sporting the papal head piece has triggered a slew of reactions, calling it offensive and insensitive. The costume in itself was remarkably made, with intricate use of pearls and beads throughout. Sartorially speaking, it is a work of art. Culturally speaking, the sensitivity of a religious group could have been considered.
