Why Honey Singh drinking a protein shake is the best thing about 2018

Bollywood music has mostly performed well in the department of objectifying women, though those Pahlaj Nihalani-Govinda-type songs could never made it to bars and pubs because who dances with Khada hai or Main Toh Raste Se Ja Raha Tha? 

Eww.

Then came the age of the Punjabi rappers, who came, saw and conquered (made it cool to ‘stalk, tease, impress’ by English-Punjabi rap).  

So, you know that the rapper is actually bragging of his affluence and demeaning his lady-love (if there is love, though) when he says that his car spends more money in a week than the girl spends in a month. But your progressive mind takes a back-seat after a few drinks, and you don’t mind shaking a leg to this because there are ‘cool’ words like déjà vu sprinkled here and there.

So, that was Honey Singh — or Hirdesh Singh — for you. (Who writes 'Yo Yo' in front of his name, same guy).

There are reasons why we remember him now. After a long time, we've seen him in his new video Makhana — and we couldn't believe our eyes!

It’s that time of year when almost all Christmas and New Year parties will blare hit, peppy numbers, which have Chandigarh in their soul and Mumbai’s spunk in their body, belonging to Badshah (who writes Bad Boy in front of his name), Raftaar, Meet Bros, Guru Randhawa, Diljit Dosanjh et al. (We are missing many names. All of you are very talented).

It was Honey Singh who introduced us to this guilty pleasure a long time back.

A Punjabi boy clad in branded clothes, gold chain(s) dangling down his front, driving a huge-a** car in a foreign location, falling in love every now and then — all this while, to heavy beats eating up the words, and meanwhile, the name of the singer flashing up. These are the guilty pleasures Honey Singh got us addicted to.

But, despite being the brain behind all this, and a number of Bollywood chartbusters, there have been many mysteries surrounding him too — nothing was known about his personal life. It was also rumoured that he had a fight with Shah Rukh Khan and the latter reportedly slapped him, though both denied the rumours. There have been several obscenity charges against Honey for allegedly using filthy language and reportedly encouraging drug addiction among youngsters (chaar bottle Vodka, anyone!).

And then, there was a hiatus.

He just disappeared from all the hullaballoo and the silence was deafening.

Several rumours floated around. 

One popular rumour was that Honey Singh was allegedly fighting drug-related issues and that he was apparenty in rehab. But then, in an interview, he himself said that he was not in rehab. Instead, he was in his Noida house, reportedly suffering from bipolar disease. He was afraid of even facing his family members. Reportedly and worryingly, he was not responding to any treatment for a long time.

Then he came back, but not with a bang. In the time that has gone by, his once-partner Badshah has taken up a lot of his market. Of course Honey thinks Badshah is just a Nano car, while Honey is a Rolls Royce. Understandably, the friendship went sour somewhere.

In 2018, we got to listen to Honey as his songs were in some movies (LoveYatri, Sonu ke Titu ki Sweety) too — but it was not his usual swaggy Desi Kalakar avatar.

And then, the bomb dropped.

Shot at Cuba, the new music video, launched just the moment when DJs were looking for a new assortment for their year-end parties, features Honey Singh — fatter, more outrageous, more blatantly cringe-worthy than ever before. But he has one justification and one cool word. Apparently, he is no ‘illuminati’.

But he is, of course, fitter as instead of 'chaar bottle vodka', he is seen having a glass of protein shake.

Since the video has been seen over five crore times, we hope there will be sobreity now.
