The rape case in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr district has once again thrust the issue of lawlessness in the state into the limelight. It has been an extremely forgettable term for the Samajwadi Party and Akhilesh Yadav, and this issue has been in constant focus.
The horrific incident happened on the night of July 29 when a family was driving to attend post-death rituals of a relative in Shahjahanpur. According to the police, dacoits hid behind bushes on the Ghaziabad-Aligarh highway and threw a piece of metal at the car when it was passing through Dostpur village around 1.30am.
The driver got down to assess the damage when the criminals overpowered him at gunpoint and allegedly forced him to drive the car into the nearby fields.
The miscreants then raped a woman passenger and her 13-year-old daughter for over two hours. They later robbed them of valuables and cash and fled the scene.
The Akhilesh government has "sprung" into action and has given the police 24 hours to deliver "justice".

It has already relieved SHO Ramsen of Kotwali Dehat, to whom the case was reported, of charge of the case owing to his alleged negligence.
The reaction on social media has been strong as the case once again exposes the condition of women's safety in India.
#Bulandshahr gang rape is a shocking reminder of the fault lines in our society. The very weak & ineffective law & order emboldens criminals
