Neecha Nagar (1946)

The first-ever movie to win an award at Cannes Film Festival, the movie starring Kamini Kaushal in the lead won the Best Film award at the French Riviera.

Do Bigha Zamin (1953)

This Bimal Roy classic starring Balraj Sahni is cult movie till date. It also won the International Prize at Cannes that year.

Pather Panchali (1956)

Probably the most famous Bengali movie globally, the film directed by Satyajit Ray won the Best Human Document award at Cannes.

Mother India (1957)

This is first Indian movie to have made it to the final list of nominations at the Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language film category and remains a must-watch for every cinema lover.

Kharij (1982)

Nominated for both the Golden Palm Award and the Jury Prize at Cannes Film Festival, this Bimay Roy movie went on to win the latter that year.

Salaam Bombay (1988)

The second Indian movie to have made it to the final nominations for Best Foreign Language film at the Academy Awards, the film was also listed in the "Best 1,000 movies ever made" by New York Times.

Lagaan (2001)

This much-loved Aamir Khan starrer is the third and so far the last Indian film to have made it to the final nominations at the Academy Awards.

Udaan (2010)

Though it didn't get much applause at the Indian box office upon its release, it was majorly applauded world over and won awards at many film festivals including Cannes and Giffioni Film Festival in Italy.
