Twitter, now rebranded as X, has introduced a new feature that enables Twitter Blue subscribers to download videos from the platform on their iOS devices.

This update is mentioned in the recently updated 'Help Center' article titled "How to share and watch videos on Twitter."

The key points of the update are as follows:

  • Twitter Blue users now have the option to download almost all videos, unless the content creator has explicitly disabled or restricted this feature.
  • Users below 18 years of age will not be able to download videos due to age-related restrictions.
  • Verified users can download videos from specific tweets for offline viewing or creative use, such as remixing the content to produce new material.
  • Additionally, X has introduced a new privacy setting for Twitter Blue subscribers, allowing them to make their accounts private. This feature restricts video viewing and downloading access to approved followers only.

However, a drawback of these new features is that users need to individually disable video downloads for each tweet, as there is no universal option to apply this restriction to all tweets containing videos.

How to download videos on X?

A Twitter Blue user will have to follow these steps to download videos that are uploaded on X:

  1. Navigate to the video you wish to download.
  2. Click on the three-dot icon located at the top right corner of the screen.
  3. Select the "Download video" option, initiating the download process and saving the video to your device's gallery or camera roll.

How to disable/restrict your videos from being downloaded?

Here are the steps a user has to follow to disable or restrict their uploaded videos on X, from getting downloaded without their consent:

  1. Compose your Tweet and attach the video you want to share with your followers. You can either choose a video from your device's library or capture a new one using the camera icon.
  2. After uploading the video, a preview of it will be displayed in your Tweet. To make any necessary edits, tap on the Edit button located at the bottom right corner of the video.
  3. To control whether others can download the video, simply toggle the "Allow video to be downloaded" option on or off as per your preference.

While this feature is currently available only for iOS users, Android and Web users can expect its availability soon.
