Lionel Messi's Instagram post to announce that Argentina were World Champions has created a new record now: it has become the most-liked picture on Instagram, with 56.5 million likes (and counting). The previous record was held by The Egg, you know, that notorious photo of the egg, which broke all records in 2019.
The Messi-led Argentina won the FIFA World Cup after a wait of 36 years. Argentina beat France 4-3 in the penalty shootouts, after the main game ended in a 3-3 draw and remained tied even as the game went into extra time.
What: The photos of Messi lifting the coveted World Cup has now overtaken that of The Egg.
Messi wrote, "CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD!!!!!!! So many times I dreamed it, so much I wanted it that I still don't fall, I can't believe it... Thank you so much to my family, to all who support me and also to all who believed in us. We prove once again that Argentinians when we fight together and united we are able to achieve what we aim. While Messi's post currently has 56.5 million likes (at the moment; and counting); likes for The Egg stopped at 56 million.
Earlier today, the post by Messi became the most-liked by any sportsperson ever.
Lionel Messi has 402 million followers on Instagram; and about one-eighth of them made his post the most-liked ever.
Messi's Argentina snatched victory from France after a stupendous performance from the runners-up. The FIFA World Cup final 2022 was held on December 18 this year at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar.
