Congress terms President's Rule in Uttarakhand 'murder of democracy'

After days of political turmoil, President's Rule has been imposed in Uttarakhand. President Pranab Mukherjee signed the proclamation under Article 356 of the Constitution dismissing the Congress government headed by Harish Rawat and placing the Assembly under suspended animation this morning on the recommendation of the Union Cabinet.

This comes a day before chief minister Harish Rawat was to face floor test in the state Assembly.

The recommendation for President's Rule was made by the Union Cabinet at its emergency meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (March 26) night. After the Cabinet meeting, Union finance minister Arun Jaitley briefed the President late last night, the sources said.

The decision to impose central rule in the state was taken after Uttarakhand Governor KK Paul submitted a report to the Centre mentioning a complete breakdown on law and order in the state.

Meanwhile, the Congress denounced the decision calling it a "murder of democracy" and said it showed that BJP did not believe in democracy. Read more.
