Sad 'educated' Indians are questioning standing up for national anthem

A country that gained Independence after a long struggle for freedom has to be told by the Apex court that the national anthem must be given respect when it is played in cinema theatres.

Couple of years ago, the national anthem was played in cinema halls with Siachen in the background, and the Army soldiers and chief unfurling the Tiranga - and we could see people standing as a mark of honour. What a shame for us when few literate and publicly known persons now stand to question as to why someone must be made to stand for the anthem. 

Do these politicians consider national symbols unnecessary for nationalism? Their arguments prove their political, individual and religious compulsions overtake their sense of responsibility and understanding as citizens of this great country, which allows them to hold such views. It is indeed a pity that their so called education and years of public life has made little difference, or else how could politicians like Owaisi or Omar Abdullah have such doubts that standing for anthem is no proof of patriotism?

Countries all over the world follow the practice of standing in honour of the national anthem and similar symbols - so much so that persons with physical disability to make efforts to follow suit. It is ironic then that few educated citizens quote the Constitution to make a case against rising for the national anthem.

Over last few years, the political developments and changes have thrown up a new order in the country. Every action, decision, arrangement or initiative is seen from the political perspective of making gains. The society and system also works on established practices, customs and culture. We need to bring discipline in our actions and follow the time-honoured practices. Should we follow traffic rules only when a policeman is watching us? A true disciplined individual would wait for the light to turn green irrespective of the time of the day.

Do our politicians find the national anthem specific to a party, religion or government? It is further astonishing that such statements and acts are not condemned or criticised by the political fraternity at any forum. It is mutual and gains tacit acceptance and support. Such a response and approach is a product of either misplaced values or meaningless education.

It will be honourable if some of our politicians welcome such nation building efforts and demand such initiatives. Please stand in honour of our national symbols, instead of standing to question them.
