The Lok Sabha elections were held over seven phases from April 11 to May 19.
The campaign to the election was particularly vicious where the distinction between the personal and the professional was completely lost. Several candidates across party lines were gagged for varying hours on Election Commission of India (ECI) orders after they reportedly gave communal or sexist speeches.
All exit polls have predicted a clear majority for the Narendra Modi-led BJP with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) expected to go beyond 320 seats.
The exit poll predicted an almost clean sweep in most north Indian states for the BJP — much like it happened in 2014. What makes this ‘predicted victory’ look bigger and better is the speculative figures coming from Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Odisha.
But the exit poll predictions also led to massive bickering with opposition parties blaming the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) for the projected loss.
Allegations of EVMs being tampered with or apparently being transported in private vehicles in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab and Haryana surfaced along with video clips that the opposition claimed reinforced concerns about voting machines just ahead of the counting of votes in the 2019 national election.
