Arvind Kejriwal: The aam aadmi on a khaas day

They came, they saw, and they looked like they had all conquered Delhi.

Delhi's historic Ramlila Maidan - where several fiery movements were launched - including Anna Hazare's 13-day Anti Corruption Campaign - had a carnival-like atmosphere this Saturday morning. Tricolors, balloons, brooms, posters, dhols, drums and patriotic songs bleating out of loudspeakers. Men, women, and children of all shapes and sizes, classes and masses, holding posters, placards in hands and white caps on their heads with the words - "Main Hoon Aam Aadmi".

The AAPtards and AAPtists - as rivals would call them on social media - marched towards the Turkman Gate, Connaught Place Junction since early morning. They streamed in slowly and steadily into an all dressed up Ramlila Maidan filling the enclosures to witness the Khaas oath taking of an Aam Leader. Arvind Kejrival is the leader they say - who is honest and will rid the country of corruption. Asked if the AAP victory means these individuals will turn into better citizens themselves. If they will start following traffic rules, keep their city clean and not bribe officials - they say "These principles trickle down from top to bottom. And we are inspired by Kejriwal."

Some are inspired and some see an opportunity in this Kejriwal "jhadoo" wave that grabbed 67 of the 70 seats in the national capital's Assembly, and swept clean the BJP and the Congress.

No wonder then, several came all dressed for the occasion to grab eye balls. One Khurana ji or Touch Baba with his motley attire and flashy stones of all imaginable colors went around distributing his visiting cards to scribes and crowds. His claim being he could touch and cure the new chief minister of his perpetual coughs. Ahoo-Ahoo.

The Tomars from Mayur Vihar had decided to create a little "dharna man" out of their four-year-old daughter, Fairy. A moustache painted on her face, wrapped in a muffler, and placard around her neck - little Fairy was soon caught up in a tug of war between TV journalists trying to force a comment out of her. After a while, the muffler went for a toss as Fairy decided it was time for her own dharna - she was in tears, with parents desperately trying to quiet her down.

When LG Najeeb Jung announced Arvind Kejriwal's name to take oath for the second time as Delhi's chief minister - a Gandhiji could also be seen cheering among the crowds. Yoga instructor from Kuwait - Sriniva Gopal - thought it an appropriate tribute to our new generation crusader. And oh, there was a PK too thanking the people of "Ei Gola" Delhi and hoping that "AK bhai desh kei luull system ko sudharengey".

From Delhi to UP to Bihar to Punjab to Andhra Pradesh - the supporters of AAP poured in in thousands from across the country. Their expectations from this nearly three-year-old party and its leadership are very high. Dilliwalas have a long demand list that they want Mr Kejriwal to fulfil. In an era of fast food and fast money, their patience is now limited. And if they could give all seven parliamentary seats to the BJP riding on a Narendra Modi wave in May 2014, they also swung the other way within nine months. So Arvind Kejriwal realises he has to hit the ground running and look and sound humble too. Arrogance hardly has takers in the restless Indian electorate. In his speech after taking over the reigns of Delhi on 14th of February - the day he had resigned after his 49 day stint last year - he sounded more reconciliatory to opponents and asked for time to fulfil his promises.

So time will tell whether the Aam Aadmi Party continues to champion the cause of aam aadmis and aurats and delivers a viable clean alternative political system.

But for now - on Valentine's Day, the common people kept their date with the man they say is "Today's CM and tomorrow's PM - Not AK47 but AK67".
