Four things to know about Tariq Khosa

Against the backdrop of the prime ministerial meeting in Ufa, Russia last month to expedite the probe into 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, Tariq Khosa, a former DG of  Federal Investigation Agency, Pakistan, has come out in the open about facts related to the attack that "the Pakistani authorities should not forget," and why “Pakistan has to deal with the Mumbai mayhem, planned and launched from its soil,” through his article titled ‘Mumbai attacks trial’ published in Dawn yesterday.

Here’s what we need to know about him.

1. A top official of the Police Service of Pakistan:

Now a retired police official, Khosa joined the service in 1976 and since then has led investigations  into high profile criminal as well as corruption cases including the assassination of Benazir Bhutto in 2007.

2. Transformed policing in Balochistan:

Khosa transformed the policing system in the restive province of Balochistan  governed  by “a tribal policing system administered by the levies,” by bringing it within the ambit  of state police.

3. Elected for assignments on international policing:

While Khosa headed the National Central Bureau, INTERPOL, he also won the election at the General Assembly Session in Singapore to be the member of INTERPOL Executive Committee Delegate from 2009 to 2012.

4. A staunch supporter of the issues of social justice:

As a regular writer for Dawn newspaper in Pakistan, Khosa has expressed his views on issues of corruption and human rights on several occasions. Drawing instances from his personal experience as a senior official in the police system of the country he writes how, “Pakistan, unfortunately, is passing through the phase of institutional decay,” in his article published in June this year.
