The Indian government is developing a framework to keep a check on fake reviews on e-commerce websites.
Centre held meetings with stakeholders of websites and discussed issues arising due to deceptive online reviews.
The meetings were conducted by the Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA).
DoCA officials met Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) along with various stakeholders like e-commerce entities, consumer forums, lawyers, FICCI, CII and consumer rights activists.
Paid and unverifiable reviews make it difficult for consumers to recognise genuine reviews.
The framework being planned will be put in place to monitor fake reviews.
A legal framework to curb the issue will also be planned.
In May 2022, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution announced that it will develop a framework to keep a check on fake reviews.
DoCA will be working on developing the framework to be followed for tracing and checking the misleading reviews.
