An earthquake of 6.6-magnitude struck Luding County in southwest China's quake-prone Sichuan province.
At least 21 casualties have been reported so far.
The earthquake impacted telecommunications lines, left the roads blocked and triggered mountain landslides that caused "serious damage", reported Chinese broadcaster CCTV.
Tremors were felt in the provincial capital Chengdu & the megacity Chongqing in Sichuan, China
The shocks forced some power stations to shut down in the areas of Garze and Yaan, reported Chinese broadcaster CCTV.
"All the dogs started barking. It was really quite scary. Some of my neighbours... said they felt it (the tremors) very noticeably," Chen, a resident of Chengdu, told AFP news agency.
