With the northeast monsoon intensifying, South India is grappling with the significant impact of this weather transformation.

Tamil Nadu

  • In Tamil Nadu, the intensified rainfall has prompted school closures in districts like Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Madurai, Theni, Dinidigul, and certain taluks in Nilgiris.
  • The region has also witnessed a landslide on the Kotagiri-Mettupalayam road in Nilgiris, causing traffic disruptions and ongoing restoration efforts.

  • Coimbatore and parts of Nagapattinam district also experienced substantial rainfall, recording 15 cm and 9 cm within a 24-hour period, respectively.
  • Two trains on the Nilgiris Mountain Railway route had to be cancelled as the track suffered soil erosion between Kallar and Adderly.
  • Parts of Madurai also faced issues with waterlogging.

Karnataka

  • The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'yellow' alert in Karnataka for several districts due to heavy rainfall.
  • The areas include Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Chamarajanagara, Chikkamagaluru, Chitradurga, Davanagere, Kodagu, Kolar, and Ramanagara.

Additionally, temperature warnings have been issued for Malnad and coastal Karnataka, as well as north and south interior parts of the state.

The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) reported that the top three locations with the highest rainfall in the last 24 hours were Chennaithodi in Bantwal Taluk of Dakshina Kannada district (150 mm), Kanthavara in Karkala Taluk of Udupi district (147.5 mm), and Kaliaya in Belthangadi Taluk of Dakshina Kannada District (143.5 mm).

In Bengaluru, heavy rainfall disrupted daily life, leading to flooded streets, traffic congestion, and delays.

Coastal districts are expected to experience scattered to widespread, very light to moderate rainfall.

This weather pattern is part of the broader impact observed across Kerala and Tamil Nadu, bringing substantial rainfall to the region.

Kerala saw substantial rainfall recently, with Kannur district receiving 7 cm of rain on Wednesday.

The latest IMD bulletin suggests widespread rainfall in Kerala over the next two days, while Tamil Nadu is forecasted to experience fairly widespread rainfall during the same period.
