US issues 90k visas to Indian students in 3 months, setting a world record

The US Embassy in India made a big accomplishment by giving out a huge number of student visas to Indians. 

In the months of June, July, and August, they provided over 90,000 student visas, which is almost 25% of all the student visas given worldwide in the same period.

The US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, at IIT Delhi for a seminar, shared the good news about visa processing. 

"We're doing a great job. We're processing visas faster than ever before in the US Mission in India. Our goal is to process at least one million visas in 2023, and we're already more than halfway there."

    Student visas from other countries

    • In 2022, every fifth student visa given by the United States went to Indian students.
    • Around 82,000 students visas were issued by the US Embassy and consulates throughout India.
    • Students are also looking at places like Uzbekistan, Philippines, Russia, Ireland, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan.
    • The numbers have grown post-pandemic, with 7.5 lakh Indian students studying abroad in 2022, up from 4.5 lakhs in 2017 and 2.6 lakhs in 2020.
    • UK, US, Australia, and Canada are top choices for students.

    Students in Canada

    • Canada is among the top choice for Indian students who want to study abroad.
    • In 2022, Canada welcomed a whopping 2,26,450 Indian students, making India the largest source of international students coming to Canada.
    • According to the data, approximately 14% of all international students in Canada are from India.
    • The current diplomatic standoff between India and Canada has raised concerns among students planning to travel to Canada on student visas.
    • India and Canada had a heated dispute after Canadian PM Justin Trudeau made strong claims that Indian agents might have had a role in the killing of Sikh separatist leader Nijjar in British Columbia on June 18 this year.
    • The India-Canada diplomatic dispute has taken a worrying turn as India has suspended its visa service to Canada.
