Sourav Ganguly out. Roger Binny set to be the new BCCI President

India’s 1983 World Cup winning hero Roger Binny is all set to replace Sourav Ganguly as the new BCCI President. Ganguly, who held the post for the past three years, will make way for Binny on October 18 at the Board of Control for Cricket in India's Annual General Meeting (AGM).

What will be the changes in the BCCI? At the AGM on October 18, there will be few changes in the governing body.

  • Jay Shah, the present General Secretary will replace Ganguly as India's representative at the all powerful ICC board.
  • Sports Minister Anurag Thakur's brother Arun Singh Dhumal will replace Brijesh Patel as the the new IPL chairman.
  • Maharashtra BJP leader Ashish Shelar will be the new treasurer. He will no longer hold the post of President at Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA).
  • Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sharma's close aide Devajit Saikia will replace Jayesh George as new joint secretary.

A look at Roger Binny's career: The former allrounder is most famous for his role in the final of 1983 World Cup against West Indies. Binny took the prized wicket of West Indian batter Clive Lloyd. He was also the leading wicket taker in the tournament with 18 wickets. 

  • Born on July 19, 1959 in Bengalur, Binny is of Scottish descent. He is also the first anglo-Indian player for the Indian cricket team at the international level.
  • He made his ODI debut on December 6, 1980 against Australia at Melbourne Cricket Ground.
  • Binny also made his Test debut on November 21, 1979 against Pakistan at the Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium.
  • He has played 99 international matches for India and scored 1,459 runs and has taken 124 wickets.
  • Binny was also the coach of India's under-19 World Cup winning side of 2000. 
  • He was also once the coach of Bengal cricket team.
  • Previously, Binny had been a part of Karnataka State Cricket Association.

    Binny was given hint about the new post when Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) named him as its representative at BCCI AGM instead of secretary Santosh Menon.

What about Ganguly? Earlier, it was reporter that Ganguly was interested in running for the BCCI President's role for the second term but he was told that there is no precedence of giving a second term to the Board President, reported PTI.

  • Instead of BCCI President role, Ganguly was offered the post of BCCI Chairman, which he rejected, news agency PTI reported.
  • Once Ganguly refused the role, Dhumal was made the IPL Chairman.
  • Ganguly is also expected to file for the position of International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman.
  • The ICC elections are slated to happen in November and there is no assurance that Ganguly will be appointed as ICC Chairman.

On October 18, there will also be no elections as all the candidates will be elected unopposed.
