Modhera, the Sun Temple village is now running 24x7 on solar power. What made this possible?

In Mehsana district, about 100 km from Gujarat's capital Gandhinagar is India's first solar power village that runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with solar energy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared this on Sunday (October 9) saying that the village, Modhera, known for the Sun Temple, will now be known for solar energy.

Government produces electricity and people purchase it. But we want people to be producers of power. Don’t pay for electricity; sell it and earn from it instead.

According to the government, the locals will now save 60-100% of their electricity bill by using solar energy.

How? This was made possible with a scheme launched by the central and local government in March 2022 known as the ‘Solarisation of Modhera Sun Temple and Town.’

  • Sun Temple in Modera will also use solar energy for heritage lighting and 3-D projection. Tourists will be educated about Modhera's history through this projection which will last for 15-18 minutes during the evening.
  • Electric vehicle charging and parking infrastructure have also been created at the temple complex.

Ahead of assembly elections this year, PM Modi is on a three-day visit to Gujarat. On Monday, he laid the foundation stone and dedicated multiple projects worth over 3,900 crores in Modhera. Furthermore, he visited Modheshwari Mata Temple in Modhera and performed pooja and darshan there.
