K-Pop star Sulli died by suicide four years ago. A documentary is now shedding light on her last interview 

South Korean singer and actor Sulli's death by suicide in 2019 sent shockwaves across the Korean entertainment industry, especially given her very public struggle with mental health issues and online bullying. After 4 years, a documentary dedicated to Sulli, titled "Dear Jinri" is set to be screened at the 28th Busan International Film Festival.

The festival will be held from October 4-13.

What is the documentary about? 

• Dear Jinri, named after Sulli's real name Choi Jin-ri, sheds light on her last in-depth interview from 2019. 

• The fictional short film 4: Clean Island starring Sulli will also be shown as a part of the documentary.

• Before Dear Jinri, Sulli was shooting a documentary for Netflix called "Persona: Sulli". But with her passing on October 14, 2019, the project remained unfinished. Persona: Sulli was the second installment after Persona, starring another prominent singer-actor IU.   

• On September 5, 2023 during the online press conference, Senior Programmer Nam Dong Chul shared details about the 28th Busan International Film Festival, including invited films, major events, and guests. 
• The Wide Angle Documentary Showcase, a festival section dedicated to showing unique and thought-provoking documentary films, also announced that Dear Jinri would be part of its lineup, with organizers calling it a "captivating topic of work". 

Who was Sulli?

Sulli or Choi Jin-ri, was a well-known South Korean singer and actress. She was only 25 when she was found dead in her home. 

• Sulli started her career as a child actress in the SBS historical drama "Ballad of Seodong" in 2005. 

• Later, she joined SM Entertainment, and became a member of the K-pop girl group, f(x), in 2009. 

• Alongside her music career, she also acted in the SBS romantic comedy series "To the Beautiful You" in 2012 alongside Shinee's Minho, earning two SBS Drama Awards and a nomination at the 49th Paeksang Arts Awards
• Sulli left the K-pop group f(x) in August 2015 and focused on modeling from 2015 to 2017, eventually becoming the face of Estée Lauder. 

• She made a comeback to music in 2018 with a guest appearance on Dean's single "Dayfly" and released her debut solo single "Goblin" in June 2019. 

• Sulli was ahead of her time and defied traditional expectations for women in Korean culture and was a rare feminist voice among female entertainers.

• She actively fought against cyberbullying, which personally affected her due to her complex public image. 
• In October 2018, she disclosed her long-term battle with panic disorder and social phobia. Before her death, she was struggling with severe depression.

The 28th Busan International Film Festival is scheduled to start on October 4 and continue until October 13 at the Busan Cinema Center. 

After four years, everyone will listen to the last words of the idol whose passing shook the K-pop industry and made people realize that the world behind all the glitter and lights is very different.
