The 29-year-old had established herself as a trot singer in her native country. Trot is a popular K-pop genre that focuses on repetitive rhythm patterns and vocal modulation.
Even though she started her musical journey with the traditional form of Korean music called Pansori, she soon emerged as one of the leading trot singers of K-pop after releasing her first album My Life, Me in 2019.
After the police recovered her body, they also found a suicide note at the scene although its contents are yet to be disclosed to the media.
Fans of Haesoo’s work and fans of K-pop in general are taking to social media to express their concerns about the increasing mental pressure that many Korean artists are facing.
Haesoo’s death is not the first time a K-pop artist has died by suicide and it was only three weeks earlier that 25-year-old Astro member Moon Bin’s death sent shockwaves in South Korea.
In 2022, South Korea bore witness to over 37 suicides in a day. The suicide of 27-year-old model and actress Yoo Joo-eun in Seoul last August similarly shocked the locals. Now, Haesoo’s death adds to the long list of concerning suicide cases in the South Korea.
