India is set to sign a deal to purchase 26 Rafale M naval jets and three additional Scorpene submarines from France. These agreements, worth approximately Rs 90,000 crore, are expected to be finalised during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to France from July 14 to 16, reported India Today.

The defence procurement board (DPP) cleared the deals on Monday (July 10). The Indian Navy is planning to use the Rafale aircraft on its aircraft carriers, and the defense ministry is expected to approve it soon. Due to a lack of aircraft and submarines, the Indian Navy has been facing a pressing need to fulfill its requirements.

On July 14, PM Modi has been invited as the chief guest at the Bastille Day Parade in Paris.

The Rafale naval jets that India is planning to buy from France are different from the 36 Rafale fighter jets that it has already purchased.

Key differences between Rafale naval jets and Rafale fighter jets

Purpose and design: The Rafale naval jets are specifically designed for operations from aircraft carriers, while the Rafale fighter jets are intended for land-based operations.

Carrier compatibility: The naval jets feature a folding wing design, allowing for efficient storage on aircraft carriers. They also have a strengthened undercarriage to facilitate takeoffs and landings on pitching carrier decks.

Weaponry: The naval jets are equipped with specialized maritime weapons, including anti-ship missiles and air-to-surface missiles. In contrast, the fighter jets lack these capabilities, as they are not intended for carrier-based operations.

Cost: The naval jets are pricier than the fighter jets due to their carrier-specific features, such as the folding wing design and strengthened undercarriage.

Why India needs Rafale naval jets

Strengthening naval air power: The acquisition of Rafale naval jets would enhance India's naval air power, replacing the aging MiG-29K jets currently in service with the Indian Navy.

Deterrence against Chinese aggression: As China expands its naval presence in the Indian Ocean region, the Rafale naval jets would provide India with a more capable and modern fighter jet, serving as a deterrent to potential threats.

Safeguarding maritime interests: India possesses crucial maritime assets, including oil rigs, merchant shipping, and fishing fleets. The Rafale naval jets would help protect these assets from potential attacks.

Operational benefits of Rafale naval jets

Extended range and endurance: Compared to the MiG-29K jets, the Rafale naval jets offer a longer range and endurance, enabling operations further from the coastline and for extended durations.

Enhanced survivability: Equipped with advanced avionics and electronic warfare systems, the Rafale naval jets offer improved survivability in combat situations.

Versatility: The naval jets can be employed in various missions, including air-to-air combat, air-to-surface strikes, and anti-ship warfare. This versatility grants the Indian Navy multiple options in potential conflicts.

Bottom line

The acquisition of Rafale naval jets will significantly bolster India's naval capabilities. It will strengthen naval air power, act as a deterrent against aggression from China, and safeguard India's maritime interests.

With extended range, enhanced survivability, and operational flexibility, these naval jets will empower the Indian Navy to protect and assert its influence in the region.
