What if we told you that you could have one plane ticket that would allow you to travel to 100+ cities and towns all across Europe and the UK? Not only that, but with that ticket, you can travel by plane, train, and even bus. Sounds like a dream come true, right?

Yes, Air India has now come up with an idea for such a ticket that can make your travel journey a little more hassle-free.

What

  • India's flag carrier, Air India, has recently collaborated with AccesRail, an International Air Transport Association travel partner, and now it will allow travellers to travel much more easily.

  • This 'intermodal' agreement allows Air India travellers to easily reach more than 100 cities and towns across Europe and the UK using just a single ticket.
  • This partnership offers passengers the convenience of using bus and rail services while retaining the same baggage allowance provided during their flight.
"The expansion of our global network is one of our key priorities in the ongoing, comprehensive transformation of Air India. This partnership with AccesRail not only helps us to provide our guests easy access to an extended network of destinations across Europe, but also to bridge the gaps in connectivity between India and Europe."
- Nipun Aggarwal, Chief Commercial & Transformation Officer, Air India

Where all can you travel?

Now, even though many details are awaited, according to reports, here's a list of countries that have been reported as part of the arrangement: Austria, Belgium, Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, and the United Kingdom, utilising the entry points of Amsterdam, Birmingham, London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Milan, and Vienna.

Apart from this, with the intermodal ticket, you gain access to various bus and train services, including Avanti West Coast (UK), National Express (UK), Trenitalia (Italy), ÖBB Austrian Railways (Austria), SNCB Belgian Railways, and Thalys (Netherlands/Belgium).

Now, if you're wondering how can it happen? Here's the thing. AccesRail has its own something called 'designator code', thus making intermodal journeys on a single ticket possible.

“We are excited to be launching our Air India-AccesRail cooperation and look forward to continuing with Air India on a global scale with so many of our intermodal rail and coach partners. Through this enhanced AccesRail partnership, Air India will be able, now and in the future, to offer its customers more destinations and more possibilities in a more seamless fashion."
- Andrew Popescu, Vice President Business Development, AccesRail

Not the first

  • Air India is not the first one to do so. This 'one ticket, several destinations' move was first initiated by Vistara, the other airline Air India is soon to merge with.
  • In January 2023, Vistara merged with WorldTicket to enable connections via Deutsche Bahn rail services from Frankfurt to Germany on a single ticket. In simple terms, Vistara customers were able to connect from any one of the 16,000 train stations in Germany to Frankfurt Airport and Delhi, and vice versa.

If you're wondering where can you get these Air India tickets? Well, right now you can just book via global travel agents, but soon you will be able to book on their site.
