When you're inarguably the country's leading fashion icon, representing an international cosmetic giant on the red carpet of one of the most anticipated film festivals in the world, it's normal to feel the pressure.
Especially when you know that people back home would be scanning each and every outfit you wear with a microscopic eye, eager to find something to pick on.
But if Sonam Kapoor felt any pressure whatsoever, she certainly didn't let it show. Yes, there was an overdose of Ralph & Russo, but since most of the looks worked well, we'll let that pass. And, I also missed some colour in her looks but that's a minor gripe.
Wearing one after another "India inspired" outfit at this year's Cannes Film Festival, she went on to ace pretty much everything she wore. Yes, pretty much but not everything!
1. This Rimzim Dadu black and blue sari was the perfect start for Sonam. It's the best of both worlds: cutting edge in style and yet Indian in essence. Nothing about the look was wrong. And only Sonam could have chosen this unconventional sari over the heavily embroidered ones worn by other celebrities.
2. For her first red carpet walk this year, Sonam went all out. Her white Ralph & Russo couture gown with the cold shoulder, cape and choker was pristine, and truly world class. This one was probably her best look. Ever!
3. This Ralph & Russo outfit isn't particularly remarkable, especially after the previous two outings. She wore it for interviews alone and so she's forgiven.
4. Her second red carpet appearance was in yet another Ralph & Russo couture piece. This one was creamy in colour with some glitter to boot, fit her like a glove and had a cape full of roses. No complains at all.
5. For the Chopard event, she wore a beautiful neckpiece from the same brand along with a Ralph & Russo (again!) outfit in a contrasting black. The body suit and frilly sheer skirt combination didn't work as well though I loved the lacy gloves. Among the neckpiece, gloves and outfit, everything called out for attention and resulted in a big clash.
6. For the prestigious AmFar Gala, Sonam wore a powder blue Ralph & Russo gown along with jewellery from Kalyan Jewellers. My most favourite part was certainly the Indian braid hairstyle and the lovely earrings. The gown was flattering too; just the shirt like sleeves didn't work so well.
All in all, a good year for Sonam at Cannes. Next time, we hope she adds multiple brands to her wardrobe. It certainly adds diversity.
