If the ability to save Earth by only drinking beer was up in the market, it is safe to say that it would go out of stock quite swiftly, and Epic Cleantec is banking on exactly that with its 'beer' made from recycled water.

What

Through one of the very unthinkable routes of innovation, Epic Cleantec and Devil's Canyon Brewing Company have come up with Epic OneWater Brew.

This brew is is made by using greywater sourced from showers, laundry, and bathroom sinks from a 40-storey San Francisco apartment building.

In addition to turning this recycled water into beer, the beermakers have ingeniously also installed onsite equipment to capture, treat, and repurpose this water for various other non-drinking purposes.

Beer out of recycled water, meanwhile, is an attempt by the collaborating companies to advertise the perks of reusing water in a “fun way”.

What’s the brew?

  • The beer is a type of Kölsch-style ale, which is a light-bodied and crisp beverage with its roots in Germany.
  • It stands out for being made with recycled grey water sourced from Fifteen Fifty, the upscale San Francisco apartment complex.

How is it made?

Epic Cleantec's 'revolutionary' water recycling system acts as a solution for sustainable buildings.

What it means: The cutting-edge system recycles a staggering 95% of wastewater, including both blackwater from toilets and graywater from sinks, washing machines, bathtubs, and showers. So, the wastewater is technically not being wasted.

Here's how it works:

  • The process starts with advanced biological treatment to eliminate organic matter.
  • This is followed by micro-filtration, utilising ultra-thin 0.04-micron membranes (that's a mere 0.05% of the thickness of a human hair!).
  • As a final step, the water undergoes disinfection using ultraviolet light and chlorine, ensuring it's safe for non-potable applications like toilet flushing, urinals, irrigation, and laundry.
  • Imagine the impact! In buildings like Fifteen Fifty, this remarkable system is designed to recycle a whopping 7,500 gallons of water daily, equivalent to an impressive 2.75 million gallons per year.
  • So, in the beer, the Epic Cleantec folks use 'highly purified water sourced from the graywater reuse installation' at the San Francisco apartment complex.

Can you get this beer to drink though?

You won't be able to get your hands on one of these anytime soon as both Epic Cleantec and Devil’s Canyon Brewing Company have stressed majorly on the fact that this beer was more like a “demonstration project” to showcase the advantages of reusing water.

So, looks like you'll have to settle for the usual Tuborgs and Coronas at the moment.
