10 best dressed stars at Oscars 2016 red carpet

If you were up earlier than usual today then it had to be either for the Annual Budget being presented by Union finance minister Arun Jaitley in Parliament or to catch up on all the excitement and action at the Oscars this year. If it was the latter, you're reading the right article.

The 88th Academy Awards was a fantastic show this year - Leonardo DiCaprio finally won his first Oscar, an Indian and a Pakistani won an award each and our very own desi girl Priyanka Chopra walked the red carpet and presented an award.

As for the red carpet fanfare, it was a wonderful turnout too. Almost everyone was rather well dressed making it slightly difficult to pick out the best ten.

However, since someone's got to do the dirty work, let's get down to applauding the better outfits and even better women who adorned those.

Here's then is our pick of the ten best looks from 2016's Oscars red carpet, in no particular order.

1. Alicia Vikander

Extra points for the shoes!

She clearly won everything this year - from acing the red carpet in this delicate Louis Vuitton dress in a soft yellow shade to then bagging the Best Supporting Actress for her performance in The Danish Girl, Alicia clearly was shining bright. From the fluffy hemline to the metallic print, everything spelled magic in this one. Extra points for the shoes!

2. Naomi Watts

Like an angel.

Nothing short of angelic, Naomi Watts in Armani Prive was one of the most elegant looks on the red carpet this year. The mermaid-like fitted gown was the ideal choice for her body and the decision to go easy on jewellery letting the neckpiece do the talking was a brilliant one. Also, the fact that her gown did not have a fishtail was what made it worth it.

3. Kate Winslet

With Titanic co-star Leonardo DiCaprio.

One of my favourite looks on this year's red carpet, Kate Winslet, in her Ralph Lauren black gown, was simply breathtaking. The almost-electric black dress accentuated her curves, sparkled in the right amount and the trail added a sense of grandeur to the look. Marvellous!

4. Olivia Munn

The perfect choice.

Demure yet delightful, Olivia Munn's orange Stella McCartney look was a major surprise. When a woman that hot decides to not dare-to-bare, it always makes for a refreshing change. From the colour to the fit, everything about this look worked perfectly well. Also, that bracelet was a nice finishing touch.

5. Charlize Theron

Lady in red.

One of the better dressed women in Hollywood, Charlize is no newcomer in the best dressed category. And this year too she upped the game in a daring Christian Dior outfit with a neckline so deep, it left us asking for more. Her fiery red outfit with the long neckpiece falling on her chest was the ultimate show stealer. Too bad she didn't win any major laurels at the awards.

6. Rachel McAdams

Classy.

Looking spectacular, Rachel McAdams walked the red carpet in a muted green August Getty Atelier gown with a long trail, thigh-high slit and bare back. It's the best advertisement for how to do sexy without looking trashy or going over the top. Fantastic!

7. Brie Larson

Basic Instinct.

If Brie Larson's sensitive performance in The Room didn't win your heart (seriously?), then her custom Gucci gown would certainly have done the trick. The frilly-feathery dress with its statement waist-band was a tricky look to pull-off but Brie aced it like a pro. Also, she was smart enough to know that when your look isn't basic, it's best to keep the hair-do clean and simple.

8. Jennifer Lawrence

Not love-at-first-sight, but look at her...

Firstly, her hair was bang-on. And Jennifer Lawrence trumped everyone completely in her black and sheer Dior look that actually wasn't as risqué as it may have looked at first. It isn't an instantly likeable outfit, yes but look carefully and you'll find the smartest sheer work in recent times.

9. Jennifer Garner

Elegance.

The second all-black look, after Kate Winslet's electric one, Jennifer Garner's Versace gown was in stark contrast to Kate's shiny look. Keeping the silhouette classic, Jennifer experimented more with her jewellery and let the top half of the outfit, with its slightly sparkly layering stand apart. Sometimes all you need to ace the red carpet look is sheer elegance.

10. Priyanka Chopra

PC pulled it off.

Making the whole of India proud, Priyanka Chopra walked the red carpet in a peek-a-boo white Zuhair Murad outfit. Yes, the look isn't particularly new - we've seen the likes of JLo and Beyoncé do many such numbers in the past - but it isn't an easy one to pull off. But, our PC managed to do that rather well. I wish I could experiment with the hairdo but face down, she looked fantastic. The clutch in particular was lovely.
