Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer is set to hit the theatres on July 21, and it is generating quite a buzz for various reasons apart from its clash with Greta Gerwig's Barbie. Cillian Murphy, the Irish actor known for hits including Peaky Blinders is leading the movie, is definitely one of the reasons behind the buzz.
Murphy has a huge following of fans who simp over him and for all the right reasons. During a recent London premiere of Oppenheimer (July 15), the 47-year-old actor was seen wearing a sheer shirt with a Saint Laurent high-waist trousers suit.
This led to social media going crazy over the look.
However, some of us Indians on Twitter pointed out that the look is exactly the same as Jimmy Shergill's in the song Jaage Jaage from the movie Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi, and the resemblance is uncanny.
No, we are not accusing anyone of copying anyone's style, but the trend of dressing men in sheer shirts is very Bollywood 2000s vibes.

Totally unrelated but what Cillian Murphy is doing today Jimmy Shergill was doing 20+ years ago.

You cannot deny that you have not seen men, especially celebs from Hollywood, like Lucien Laviscount (the plot from Emily in Paris, jk), Manu Ríos, Harry Styles, or even Shawn Mendes wearing sheer shirts right now (we will get to that in a bit).
Twitter pointed out and we agree, that the trend of dressing in see-through shirts actually started in the 2000s when a lot of Bollywood actors including Shah Rukh Khan, wore a sheer or see-through shirt (the 2000s was either a no-shirt or see-through shirt era for Bollywood men).
Now here are some examples:
1. Shah Rukh Khan in Suraj Hua Maddham
SRK in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham wore various see-through shirts in the famous song, Suraj Hua Maddham. He not only rocked the black colour, but throughout the song, he wore it in different colours like white, off-white and neon light blue!
Apart from that song, Shah Rukh Khan has also been spotted wearing a see-through shirt, with nothing underneath, on various occasions; and like a Twitter user said, 'no one is complaining'.
BRB, tuning in to Suraj Hua Maddham...
2. Hrithik Roshan from Ek Pal Ka Jeena
Now that you have recovered from SRK, next in line we have Hrithik Roshan who wore a see-through shirt in one of his most hit numbers with Ameesha Patel (who is now in the headlines for not the right reasons) Ek Pal Ka Jeena from Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai. He was wearing a black netted see-through half shirt with silver chains to give him the 'rich NRI guy look'.
3. Salman Khan in Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega
Throwback to the 90s when Salman Khan chose this rather extreme version of a see-through sleeveless shirt in the movie Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega. He was seen wearing one in the main title track.
Why was getting men into a see-through shirt a trend in the 2000s? We don't know that for sure, however, a commonly held belief that may have been shared by costume designers like Thilaka Paramesh who worked on films such as Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (K3G), is that they aimed to portray the male stars as affluent individuals exuding a cool and stylish aura.
Sheer shirts look like have made a comeback in the West and male celebs are wearing the trend to the red carpet. For instance, during the Oscars after-party, celebs like Shawn Mendes and Hunter Doohan were seen acing this trend. Take a look:
Now, if we are talking about this trend, we need to give a special mention to Harry Styles who had a notable influence and is frequently seen sporting sheer blouses. One of his most iconic ones was during the 2019 Met Gala, where he made a statement in a Gucci sheer black blouse.
But Jimmy Shergill in Jaage Jaage is still quite a vibe.
