Generation Z is fed up with the hustle culture, that's for sure. There's a new term added to the list of anti-work and it's called "Lazy Girl Jobs". Lazy girl jobs, another TikTok trend is right on top of the pyramid with other anti-work terms such as quiet-quitting, the Great resignation, act your wage, etc.

What is "Lazy Girl Jobs"?

  • While the context of Lazy Girl Jobs applies to everyone, girls and those who are not girls, it has resonated more among working women.
  • The term was introduced by Gabrielle Judge on TikTok, who defined a lazy girl job as a safe, easy, good-paying, and flexible job, typically remote, that takes the rat race out of the equation and allows living a more balanced life.

  • Basically, it means having to do the bare minimum at work that is also easy, within work hours of course, while getting paid good enough to not worry about living paycheck to paycheck.
  • Judge described the term as a "mentality" that allows people to seek out the "easy" jobs that don't drain them mentally and physically.

  • The video has been viewed over 3.6 million times on TikTok with people in comments asking how they can land such a job.
  • It focuses on women because the rat race is traditionally a lot harder for them as they don't get the acknowledgment or even equal pay for the same jobs that their male counterparts do. Not to mention the priorities that demand women's attention at home too as the traditional primary caretaker.

Is it really "lazy"?

  • People reacting to the term have pointed out that the word 'lazy' is misleading. Jobs that fulfill us, allow us work-life balance and reasonable pay should be the norm and not be defined as lazy.
No one in a "lazy girl job" is actually lazy because the companies who do take care of their employees have really high standards for hiring, so no one is at these companies actually slacking off.
- Bonnie Dilber, tech recruiter, TikTok
  • However, the term lazy girl jobs is meant to be satirical as people in these jobs are often chided for being "lazy" despite them being engaged in a fair-pay job.

It is the same with the term quiet quitting, which has been criticised for making burnout sound negative on the part of the employee as the "quitter" and not pointing out the problem with employers. Quiet quitting also involves doing the bare minimum, for which one is paid, so using the word 'quitting', gives a negative spin to not wanting to work beyond the pay.
