The festive season is here, and if you're Indian, you know that Diwali and other upcoming festivals are something you would want to spend with your family. However, that cannot always be the case. There are several reasons, including work, that can keep you stuck in a place you might call home, but you're still not with your family. In that situation, it can seem challenging.
If you find yourself in such a situation, here are some things you can do to help you not feel so alone.
It's 2023, and we know that you can spend time with friends and family virtually. Schedule video calls to share Diwali wishes, exchange stories, and feel a sense of togetherness. We know that it might not help you completely, but talking to your friends, and family, even virtually, might help you feel a little better.
Out of all the things that you might miss about home, let us agree food can be one of the major ones. So, prepare a special Diwali meal for yourself that reminds you of home or order from your favourite restaurant. Treat yourself to your favourite dishes to make the day festive and a little like home.
Decorate your home with diyas, candles, and festive lights. Creating a festive atmosphere can uplift your spirits and make the celebration more enjoyable.
Enjoy Diwali-themed movies, TV shows, series or cultural programs, or else watch a sitcom that can help lighten your mood. Cosying up with your favourite food, with your favourite series or movie can sometimes be very therapeutic. Many platforms offer Diwali specials that you can watch to immerse yourself in the festive mood.
It took me a lot of time to realise, but trust me, sometimes spending time with yourself is also really important. Take yourself out on a date and drive around the city that you live in to see the lights and festive environment to feel a lot better. A lot of fairs and melas take place during this month, especially around Diwali, that can help you feel better.
Do things that can help you feel good. Consider volunteering your time or making a donation to a charity. Helping others can be a fulfilling way to spend your time and contribute positively to the community.
This one is my personal favourite and works for me every time I feel alone or sad, for that matter. Take the day to pamper yourself. Whether it's a relaxing bath, reading a good book, indulging in a favourite hobby, or even some skincare, prioritise self-care and do things that bring you joy.
For instance, try this 10-step-Janapese skin care to not only get a good glow, but it will help pass your time!
Play online games with friends or family. Many online platforms offer multiplayer games that can be enjoyed together virtually including the iconic Teen Patti and other card games.
Remember, the key is to make the day special for yourself in a way that brings you joy and fulfilment. Or if nothing else works, and if you are not feeling better, get yourelf some much-deserved rest!
