By now, you know that sunscreen should be an integral part of your skincare routine. But here's the thing, not only is applying sunscreen important, but finding the right sunscreen is equally important, since it can be the one-step skincare if you don't like a 10-step routine. So, how to find the right one?
Finding the right sunscreen is like finding the right match using a dating app. You have to find someone (in this case, a sunscreen) that matches your type (skin type), and look after you... we mean your skin concerns like acne or hyperpigmentation.
Now, how to choose the right one?
Dr Sujit Shanshanwal, a dermatologist from Mumbai explains, "Indians are the same human beings... so there is no different kind of sunscreen that Indians should use." However, he also said that how to use a sunscreen depends on your respective skin tone.
Now, take a look at these pointers that Dr Saurabh K Gupta, a dermatologist from Noida and Dr Shanshanwal gave DailyO on how to choose a sunscreen.
According to both of them, there are certain things you should keep in mind:
Dr Shanshanwal says that different skin types (oily, dry, combination) have varying needs. For oily skin, a gel-based or non-comedogenic formula may be preferable, while those with dry skin might benefit from a more hydrating sunscreen.
Sun Protection Factor (SPF) determines protection against UVB rays.
"While getting a sunscreen, ensure it guards against both UVA and UVB rays," says Dr Saurabh K Gupta.
Why? UVA rays contribute to premature ageing, while UVB rays cause sunburn. A broad-spectrum sunscreen ensures comprehensive protection.
For India's humid climate, experts recommend that you should choose a water-resistant sunscreen that ensures sustained protection, even if you're sweating. Water-resistant sunscreen are good for water activities too.
Another thing that you need to consider while buying a sunscreen is your sensitivity to certain ingredients.
Check the label:
Dr Shanshanwal said, "Individuals with darker skin tones often require specific formulations to prevent hyperpigmentation (which is very common among Indians)."
He further advised them to use "sunscreens with micronised zinc or titanium dioxide" as it can be beneficial without leaving a noticeable residue.
Remember that proper application and timely reapplication (every 2 hours) is crucial for effective sun protection. You should also apply sunscreen on a cloudy day, or when indoors.
