GenZ is bringing the Y2K fashion back in style

Millennials remember their youth and GenZ-ers remember their teenage years, when fashion was beyond solid colours. It was the time when you tried to wear your jeans as low as possible and tops were as colourful as possible.

It was the time of Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Kareena Kapoor as Poo from Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, and Aishwarya Rai from Dhoom 2, who set fashion ablaze in the early 2000s.

Most of us would have hesitated at the idea of wearing low-waist jeans some 2-3 years ago, the time of high-waist clothing. However, the Y2K fashion that we all feel nostalgic about is coming back. The Y2K fashion in all its glory is being brought back to life by GenZ-ers, mostly on TikTok. But the trend is spreading like the novel coronavirus.

For those who were too young during the Y2K time to indulge in all the trending fashion, it’s good news for them as now, all grown up, they can afford to live that era once again.

But of course, the Y2K 2022 is a blend of the old with the new, but without the toxicity that was glamorised by Y2K.

Here are 5 fashion statements from Y2K that are trending right now:

1. LOW WAIST JEANS AND SKIRTS

Oh we have to start the list with the hated and beloved fashion trend of all time. The low waist jeans and micro mini skirts defined the early 2000s. Remember Kaanta Laga remix song from 2002 and Micro Mini played by Rakhi Sawant in Main Hoon Na?

Now, these styles are back. Miu Miu made it official that the mini skirts are back in high fashion by presenting the ultra-low rise micro pleated skirt in April 2022.

However, the low-waist jeans and skirts back in the 2000s signified the era's toxic beauty culture. The low-waist clothes were exclusionary, meant for only those who were super skinny and had flat tummies. Since then, we have made our ways into the body positivity debate, trying to undo some damage.

But the latest versions of these low-waist jeans and clothes are also releasing in plus sizes, making them more inclusive.

2. CARGO TROUSERS

This is one trend that I always loved, but was never able to buy till now. The straight cut trousers with lots of pockets, low (but comfortable and less tight) rise are back. And along with them, the strappy fitting crop top has also returned.

3. SCARF TOP

The scarf top represents that the Y2K fashion era was a lot simpler than now. A time when there were no rules and like everyone is saying, wearing a dress on jeans was considered cool (cue Deepika Padukone in the Vogue shoot). The scarf top can be worn as a tube top or a criss-cross halter neck and whatever way you did like.

So grab that scarf you’ve been eyeing for so long.

4. COLOURFUL BEADS

I still keep a colourful beaded choker from the early 2000s with me. I just felt that it never went out of style. Along with the candy looking necklaces, nail colours and nail art with popping colours and designs are also in.

5. SHOULDER BAGS

The shoulder bags perhaps returned a little earlier than 2022. But it’s everyone’s favourite accessory to go with those low waist jeans. Besides, they are also way more practical than today’s micro bag trends (what’s the purpose of those?).

We need to make the honourary mentions too – full-length Matrix movie-style coats, small rectangle sunglasses, chunky sandals, etc.

So, which of these styles are you waiting to try on?
