Barbie and Ken baby name searches soar 300% after Greta Gerwig's movie

The release of the long-anticipated blockbuster movie, "Barbie," in July 2023, has ignited a noticeable trend in baby name searches on various platforms, with a growing interest in the names 'Barbie' and 'Ken.' Notably, Mattel's iconic doll, Barbie, possesses the full name 'Barbara Millicent Roberts.'

Babynames.com, a website renowned for assisting in finding baby names, deciphering name meanings, and identifying trending names, recently shared with TMZ that it experienced a remarkable surge in searches for the name Barbie, witnessing a staggering 300% increase, while the searches for the name Ken also rose by a substantial 200% throughout July.

Due to the release of the #BarbieMovie, the Baby Names website has seen a 300% increase in searching “Barbie” as a baby name and a 200% increase in searching “Ken” as a baby name.

While the name Barbie undeniably maintains a dominant presence in baby name searches, the name Ken is not far behind.

Upon querying the name Barbie on babynames.com, the website reveals that this name originates from 'American' roots and carries the meaning "stranger." It further notes that the name Barbie enjoyed considerable popularity in the year 1964.

Ken, a name hailing from Scottish origins, signifies "handsome." This name reached its pinnacle in popularity during the year 1963.

Greta Gerwig's Barbie movie has been killing it in the theatres and entered the billion-dollar club as it made $1 billion at global box office. This dreamy, all-pink and iconic movie starring Margot Robbie as 'Barbie' and Ryan Gosling at 'Ken' became the second-highest grossing film of the year after The Super Mario Bros Movie.
