After presenting us with some horrifying romantic movies, Karan Johar is now trying his hand at — horror. The first poster of Bhoot — Part One, The Haunted Ship, starring Vicky Kaushal and Bhumi Pednekar, was released just this morning.
Bhoot, as you remember, was the title of one of Ram Gopal Varma’s hits, starring Ajay Devgn and Urmila Matondkar. In a tweet, KJo even thanked RGV for letting him use the title so ‘generously!’
Now the poster looks riveting — a close-up of Vicky screaming in pain and angst, seen through the broken window of a ship as shards of glass frame his face, with a bloody, ghastly hand sinking its nails into his cheek. And yes, the fact that Vicky and Bhumi, both good actors, will feature here gives us some hope. But then, let’s now forget all that — it is Karan Johar, after all!

Karan is many things — a talk show host, an actor, a fashionista-cum-fashion commentator, a business maverick par excellence and the launcher of star kids — but a good filmmaker he is not. And his kryptonite in any case is romance. Every time he’s tried to give us a simple love story, he’s spent a little too much time storyboarding to get the clothes right rather than the scriptwriters to get the story right.
This time he picks horror, a genre particularly ill-treated in Bollywood, and we fear he might just turn that into a love story too.
Granted that the ghost will look dapper in the trendiest outfits, but until it is trying to avenge crimes against fashion — creeping in behind those who clash prints or do not own a must-have pair of white sneakers in their wardrobe — we don’t think a ghost has much to do in a KJo universe.
Perhaps Vicky is screaming because the ghost is making him wear fake designer labels?
Wait.
That’s Karan Johar’s worst nightmare!
What’s scarier is that this is just Part One. Which means, there’s a second part coming, whether you like it or not. Yes, the thought is haunting.
