FIFA World Cup 2022 has ended with Argentina winning the title with a win against defending champions France. The grand tournament at Qatar was arguably one of the best football World Cups ever played with teams like Morocco and Saudi Arabia pulling up big upsets.
While the tournament saw budding talent like Josko Gvardiol of Croatia, Jamai Musiala (Germany), Jude Bellingham (England) make a mark on a grand stage, it also saw an underwhelming performance by star players like Cristiano Ronaldo
Here are 5 players who had the best time at FIFA World Cup 2022:
1. Kylian Mbappe (France): Mbappe was arguably the best player of FIFA World Cup 2022 as he put on a magnificent show with the best coming in the final against Argentina, where he scored three goals.
The 23-year-old won the Golden Boot with 8 goals in the entire tournament.
Though Argentina won the World Cup, Mbappe etched his name in history with a great performance.
2. Lionel Messi (Argentina): What else is left to say about the great Argentina superstar who now has the most coveted feather in his cap, the World Cup. At 35, Messi has several accolades to his name.
In the FIFA World Cup, he scored seven goals and made 3 assists and ended the tournament on a high note.
Messi hasn't announced his retirement from international stage and has said that he is going to play few more matches as an international player.
3. Bruno Fernandes (Portugal): Portugal's midfielder was the standout player from the team even eclipsing the great Cristiano Ronaldo. Fernandes scored two goals in the tournament and had three assists.
Portugal suffered an early exit after a magnificent performance by Morocco in the quarter-finals. Fernandes was visibly disappointed with the match result and called on Argentine match referee Facundo Tello for being partial towards Portugal.
4. Enzo Fernandez (Argentina): The 21-year-old midfielder was one of the biggest assets of the World Cup winning Argentina team. The young midfielder made his international debut only in September 2022.
Fernandez was not part of the team in the opening match against Saudi Arabia which La Albiceleste lost 2-1.Head Coach Lionel Scaloni, however, played Fernandez in the match against Mexico and he returned the gesture by scoring his first World Cup goal in the match.
Fernandez also won the FIFA young player of the tournament award beating players like Jude Bellingham, Goncalo Ramos and Aurelien Tchouameni. The midfielder kept 88% pass accuracy in the whole tournament scoring one goal and assisting one.
5. Antoine Griezmann (France): France's promising midfielder filled in the shoes of Paul Pogba and N'Golo Kante in the team. Griezmann assisted 3 goals while creating 22 chances for France in the World Cup.
The midfielder has undergone a remarkable transformation from a free scoring forward to a strong midfielder. His skills are more inclined towards breaking up opposition's play and allowing his teammates to score the goals.
Griezmann, now 31, in a press conference said: "I think the team needs me more at the heart of action. We need that balance."
