Divorce to UPSC rank 177, the incredible story of Shivangi Goyal

Shivangi Goyal battled her tumultuous past, dealt with her present and secured her future. Hailing from a small district of Hapur in western Uttar Pradesh, Shivangi Goyal has secured an All India Rank of 177 in the UPSC Civil Services examinations.
But the journey of Shvangi was never easy. She has been living with a 7-year-old daughter with her parents after being separated (not legally) with her husband. She was married off after her college, and since then she faced harassment at her in-laws place. She is also fighting a legal divorce case with her husband.

HOW IAS HAPPENED?

Shivangi’s tryst with UPSC dates back to her college days at the Sri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), when she appeared for the UPSC exam for the first time. After an unsuccessful attempt at UPSC, she was married. 

Shivangi told AajTak that her motivation to clear the UPSC exams comes from her school principal, who back in the day told her to prepare for it. Since then, she nurtured the dreams of becoming an IAS officer. 

In 2019, Shivangi's father asked her to pursue her dreams. She prepared for UPSC, but couldn’t clear it. She said that she stuck to her self-study. Her subject was Sociology. She credits her parents and her daughter for the support they had given to her.

“Today I am happy that I have cleared the UPSC exam and my future is secured,' Shivangi said. 

Shivangi also appealed to all the young girls out there who are facing a troubled marriage. 'They can study and become whatever they want instead of the repression,' she said.

She also appealed to the parents of these girls to help their daughters if they are facing troubled marriages and cannot come out of it.
