Prince Harry could potentially lose $20 million if he fails to win the lawsuits against various media outlets, Newsweek reported. The report said that he is still going to bleed money in the millions even if he were to win all of the lawsuits. For context, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's California home is worth around $14.7 million.

  • The report came after Prince Harry lost one lawsuit against the UK Home Office relating to personally paying for police security details for him and his family when they are in the country.
  • On May 23, a UK High Court judge ruled against Prince Harry saying that he cannot privately pay for police protection.
  • UK Home Office had cut Prince Harry and his family's police security cover after they stepped down from their royal duties.
  • However, Prince Harry has demanded reinstating the police cover when in the UK given that the police have access to intelligence inputs necessary for protection.
  • Prince Harry who had a private security detail also offered to pay for the police protection, which was refused by the Home Office.

Costly lawsuits:

  • There are speculations that Prince Harry might appeal against the order in the Home Office case. But according to Newsweek, it is only one of the six legal cases that the former royal is fighting in the UK.
  • Newsweek quoting a U.K.-based attorney at Howard Kennedy, Mark Stephens, reported that Prince Harry may only be able to recover 60-70% of the legal costs even if he were to win all the cases.

  • A trial is currently underway at a UK court in the phone hacking case against the owners of Daily Mail UK, the Mirror, and The Sun.
  • Harry and several other celebrities have accused media organisations of hacking personal phones between 1996 and 2011. Prince Harry is expected to testify in June.
  • Prince Harry filed another lawsuit against The Mail On Sunday (the sister paper of Daily Mail) in February 2022 for defamation over a story about UK police protection.
  • 2019: Prince Harry won a financial settlement from Splash News and Picture Agency as well as an apology over clicking aerial photos of his home in Oxfordshire, England.
  • 2020: Prince Harry and Meghan won another settlement with US celebrity photo agency X17 over "illegal" photos of their son Archie were clicked using drones and helicopters at their California home.
  • 2021: Meghan Markle also won a claim and 1 GBP token amount from The Mail On Sunday owners for publishing extracts from her letter to her estranged father in 2018 citing infringement of privacy.
