The so-called "Marvel fatigue" was somewhat relieved this year with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 which was way better-received than the fever dream that was Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantummania. Now, with Marvel's next big release being the limited series Secret Invasion, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is resorting to a new promotional gimmick.
Given that Secret Invasion finds covert operative Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) embarking on yet another undercover operation, it makes sense for Marvel to set up an exclusive website where you can find five minutes of Secret Invasion footage as "an encrypted file" that can only be accessed through a password.
So how can you watch this footage? Just go to the website titled The Invasion Has Begun (theinvasionhasbegun.com) and log in with the password "RSD3PX5N7S".
And voila! A video starts playing.
The video plays out with the opening minutes of the first episode of Secret Invasion as we see Martin Freeman's Agent Ross (whom we first saw in Black Panther) talking about a new threat in what seems like a safe house. He meets Agent Prescod (the one-eyed warrior Beric Dondarrion in Game of Thrones) who tells him about a Skrull conspiracy that can have world-ending possibilities.
This interaction is then followed by a short teaser that features some of both new and returning faces to the MCU while giving a brief idea about the storyline.
As was known before, Secret Invasion will delve into the invasion planned by the green-skinned shapeshifting alien species Skrulls. Even though Captain Marvel introduced a positive side of Skrulls, Secret Invasion plans to explore more complications among the Skrulls. The Skrull leader Talos from Captain Marvel returns as actor Ben Mendelsohn also features in the trailer that plays after the clip.
Talos is revealed to be an ally of Nick Fury's who serves as the series protagonist. When asked about why he chose to work on this mission alone instead of the Avengers that he painstakingly assembled earlier, the trailer offers no straight answers. But with SHIELD and American security going against him, it is clear from the clip that Fury is being framed for a conspiracy that he seeks to unravel.
When it comes to new characters, Oscar-winner Olivia Colman (Queen Elizabeth in The Crown Season 3-4) and Emilia Clarke (AKA Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones) also feature as Fury's allies. While Colman plays a high-ranking MI6 agent, Clarke appears as Talos' daughter G'iah.
Kingsley Ben-Adir serves as the main villain, a rebel Skrull called Gravik. You might remember the actor in Peaky Blinders as Colonel Ben Younger or for his stellar performance as civil rights activist Malcolm X in One Night in Miami. Ben-Adir is having quite the summer for himself as he will not only be appearing in Secret Invasion but he is also one of the Kens in Greta Gerwig's highly-anticipated Barbie.
The first episode of Secret Invasion will air on Disney+ Hotstar in India on June 21. The rest of the five episodes will air every Wednesday.
