Grimes changes name of daughter with Elon Musk to Why. We have the same question, tbh

Grimes, Canadian musician and partner of Tesla CEO Elon Musk, has announced a new name for her daughter that's much simpler than the previous Exa Dark Sideræl Musk, but not much of an improvement.

A new name

The youngster is now going by the name of 'Y,' which can mean 'Why' or just be represented by a '?' (yes, a question mark). While it may seem a bit strange, Grimes explained that the name is all about curiosity and asking the eternal question. It's definitely easier to spell (and pronounce) than Exa Dark Sideræl; that's for sure.

In true Grimes fashion, she took to Twitter to announce the name change, sharing pictures of herself and her daughter donning bold yellow hairstyles. She captioned the post with "Y C" and a dragon emoji, leaving fans scratching their heads.

Why Y?

The electro-pop artist provided an explanation in a follow-up tweet, stating that her daughter's new name represents curiosity, the eternal question, and all things mysterious - an apparently fitting name for a child born to two of the most enigmatic figures in the tech and music industries.

Of course, this isn't the first time Grimes and Elon Musk have raised eyebrows with their children's names. Their son X Æ A-XII is already a walking, talking conversation starter. And now, they've added 'Y' to the mix, a name that is sure to be just as confounding to the public.

Y follows X

Their son, who was born in 2020, was initially called X Æ A-12 but it had to be changed because California law doesn't allow numbers in a legal name.

X Æ A-12, caused quite a stir when the name was first announced. Some joked that it sounded like a new model of electric car, while others wondered if it was even legal to name a child with non-alphabetic characters.

Who knows? Perhaps one day we'll all be named after our favourite celestial bodies or mathematical equations. And if we're really lucky, hopefully none of us ever live to see that day.
