Punjabi hitmaker Diljit Dosanjh created history at this year's Coachella becoming the first Indian artist to perform at the Californian music festival. Dosanjh performed some of his greatest career hits from. Patiala Peg to G.O.A.T during his performance on April 15 (Saturday).
Wearing a traditional kurta, tamba and turban, Dosanjh walked around the stage in his Punjabi attire and a pair of Panda Jordan 1s announcing "Punjabi aagaye Coachella oye (The Punjabis have arrived at Coachella)!"
The South Asian crowds at the popular music festival could be seen grooving to Dosanjh's pop numbers and even the non-desis joined in. DJ Diplo took to Instagram to share a video of him dancing to Patiala Peg.
Dosanjh's fanbase showered love on him at the performance and on social media, heralding his Coachella performance as "historic".
The 2023 edition of Coachella boasts a diverse lineup featuring not just Dosanjh but also South Asian artists like Pakistani-American singer Ali Sethi (who earned mainstream listeners with last year's Pasoori) and Indian-origin British DJ Jai Paul (who is known for his ominous Internet persona and his infamous sabbatical from music).
Coachella is a huge step-up for Dosanjh's career as the singer and actor had already been raking in cross-border collaborations such as Peaches with British singer Anne-Marie and Chauffeur with Canadian rapper Tory Lanez.
When Dosanjh inked a deal with Warner Music Group to rebrand himself as a global star in 2022, the artist's manager Sonali Singh added,
Fast forward to 2023, and the Coachella performance adds to this Dosanjh's vision as a global artist.
