Celine Dion is losing muscle control due to Stiff-Person Syndrome Battle

Canadian singer Celine Dion is facing a challenging phase as her sister, Claudette Dion, revealed her ongoing struggle with a loss of muscle control, an effect of her battle with Stiff-Person Syndrome (SPS), a rare neurological disorder she publicly disclosed a year ago.

This condition significantly impacted both her personal life and career.

What happened?

  • Nearly a year after publicly acknowledging her battle with Stiff-Person Syndrome (SPS), Celine Dion continued to grapple with its effects. Her sister's recent update saddened fans, revealing Celine's then-current loss of muscle control.
  • Last December, Dion had postponed numerous performances and a tour due to the disorder. In an Instagram post, she shared her heartfelt apology and determination to regain her strength, mentioning the challenges of touring while dealing with health issues.

Following the cancellation of her global tour, the renowned "Queen of Power Ballads," then 55 years old, might have taken a significant amount of time before returning to the stage, as indicated by her 74-year-old sister, Claudette. SPS, a progressive and incurable disorder, caused the body to attack its nerve cells, severely affecting mobility.

"I sincerely apologize for disappointing you once again. I'm putting in significant effort to regain my strength, but touring is challenging even when you're at your best. "It wouldn't be fair to continue postponing the shows, and although it saddens me, it's in everyone's best interest to cancel everything until I am genuinely prepared to return to the stage. I want you all to understand that I'm not giving up, and I eagerly anticipate the day when I can see you again!"

Understanding Stiff-Person Syndrome

  • Stiff-Person Syndrome is an exceedingly rare neurological disorder characterized by stiffness, muscle spasms, and limited mobility.
  • Though the exact cause remained unknown, it was believed to involve the body's immune system mistakenly targeting the nervous system.
  • This disorder could affect various muscle groups, leading to movement and coordination difficulties.
