Ever since the official trailer of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani dropped, the Internet has been gushing with reactions on the cast and plot. However, what has also caused considerable hype is when Alia Bhatt uses the popular political slogan 'Khela Hobe' in the trailer.

What

The trailer for Karan Johar’s upcoming movie Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is out and has caused considerable buzz on the Internet. Like any other Karan Johar movie, the film’s cast is one lengthy and heavy one.

The trailer has Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt leading the line with veteran actors Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi, and an ensemble cast.

What's the movie about?

The trailer highlights the director’s usual style of extravagant location, glowy song set-ups, a mixture of stretched-on humour in the beginning where Ranveer Singh follows the memo of “Be You” responsibly... till the last few seconds that bring out the main ‘drama’, because when you see Dharmendra cry, the stuff is concerning.

In the trailer of the movie, Alia Bhatt can be seen as Rani, the daughter of a Bengali family who comes up with a classic rom-com switch-up idea (boy lives with girl’s family, girl lives with boy’s family) to make her parents agree to marry Ranveer Singh’s visibly OTT character, Rocky Randhawa.

Netizens have been flooding social media platforms with mixed responses on Karan Johar’s 25th anniversary-special movie.

Time for Khela Hobe

While the film by itself has been the source of a lot of hype, Alia Bhatt using the popular Bengali political catchphrase “Khela Hobe” has been another major talking point.

Much to the jumpscare of Bengali people everywhere, Rani uses the famous catchphrase “Khela Hobe” in probably the most subtle dramatic sense ever since the phrase came into existence.

What does "Khela Hobe" mean?

"Khela Hobe" is a well-known political slogan in Bengali, used in Bangladesh and India, particularly in West Bengal. In English, it translates to "Game on".

The slogan became popular in India during the 2021 West Bengal State Assembly Elections when the state’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee
used the phrase during one of her campaigns. Since then, it became a warcry of sorts for Mamata Banerjee’s party, All India Trinamool Congress. The phrase inspired several songs, caricatures and even a movie use the phrase as its title.

However, this was not the first time that “Kela Hobe” was used out in the open.

How it became popular

  • The first ever person to use the phrase was Shamim Osman, a Bangladesh Awami League politician and the current member of the country’s Parliament. He too used the phrase while speaking to a crowd for a political campaign.

  • Originally, the phrase gained popularity in West Bengal when Anubrata Mondal, the president of the Trinamool Congress in Birbhum district, said it at a local political event. He said, "Khela hobe. Bhoyonkor khela hobe," which translates to "The game is on. A fierce game will be played."
  • Later, Debangshu Bhattacharya, who is a representative and leader of the youth division of the TMC party, created a jingle with 'Khela Hobe', followed by a remix version of the same song. The latter became very popular among the supporters of the party.
  • After this, when party leader Mamata Banerjee used it during a campaign, it marked the final building block of the road which would lead this phrase to country-wide popularity, and TMC eventually winning the 2021 Bengal Assembly elections.

Several politicians, even of other states and parties, began using this battlecry during their campaigns.

Notably, the Trinamool Congress hasn't missed Khela Hobe in Rocky aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. Here's what TMC MP Derek O'Brien has to say:
