After Swara Bhasker in Veere Di Wedding, Kiara Advani joined the small group of Bollywood actresses to enact an orgasm albeit hers didn’t unfold on the big screen and instead was available for streaming in the Karan Johar-directed short for Netflix’s Lust Stories. The actress, best known for playing Dhoni’s wife Sakshi in MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, said that Johar was confident that she’d be recognised for her performance as the shy wife with an unsatisfied sex life.
“Karan was so proud when people were calling him to tell him about me,” said the 25-year-old actress. “I’m happy I could make him proud. It’s been extremely overwhelming.”
The Mangeshkar clan may not be happy about Johar deploying Lata Mangeshkar’s crooning of “Kabhie Khushie Kabhie Gham” to the provocative scene drawing laughs, but Advani and the cast and crew that includes Vicky Kaushal and Neha Dhupia knew it was a winner as soon as they read the script.
“Karan has an amazing sense of humour and it has come out just the way he narrated it to me,” said Advani. “Doing comedy is extremely challenging. While everyone behind the monitor would be cracking up, Vicky (Kaushal) and I had to control our laughter and keep that straight face while enacting those hilarious scenes.” What made it easier for Advani was that Johar’s was one of the most fun sets she had worked in.
Clearly, Advani has made an impression by getting a special appearance in the Johar produced ensemble drama Kalank which stars Sanjay Dutt, Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan.
In her short career thus far Advani says she has learned as much from her failures as she has from her successes. Abbas Mastan’s Machines (2017), colossal failure at the box office, hasn’t deterred her. “I’ve learnt so much from every director I’ve worked with,” she said, “I wish to better myself with each film. I’ve been blessed with different roles till now and hope to continue that and become as versatile an actor I could be.” Lust Stories is a proof of her ambition.
