Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trial: What's new?

In the high-profile defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, the doctor of the ex-Pirates of the Caribbean star has testified.

The Johnny Depp-Amber Heard trial continues to reveal surprising information about the ex-couple's marriage. The trial, currently underway in Fairfax, Virginia in the US is expected to continue for the next 5 weeks. It began on April 11.

Previously, mariage therapist Dr Laurel Anderson acted as witness in court and claimed that both Depp and Heard were abusive to each other. 

WHAT NEW HAS BEEN REVEALED:

1. Dr David Kipper and his nurse Debbie Lloyd were initally hired by Johnny Depp in May 2014 to help him fight his opioid addiction.

2. Depp suffered an injury in March 2015 that led to his finger being severed. The injury happened when he was in Australia, filming the fifth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean series. 

3. In his court filing, Depp accused Heard of throwing a bottle at him, which severed the top of his middle finger. Heard in her court filing said that Depp likely cut his finger when he smashed a telephone.

4. Dr Kipper testified in court through a video deposition on April 18, that was recorded on February 22. Firstly, Dr Kipper told the court that his initial diagnosis of Depp was that he had "ADHD, Bipolar 1, depression, insomnia, chronic substance abuse disorder and chronic reflux."

5. Dr. Kipper was then questioned about texts that he exchanged with Depp in March 2015. The texts read, " Hi f*** man had another one. I cannot live like this. She (Amber Heard) is as full of s*** as a Christmas Goose. I'm done. NO MORE!!!! (sic).

6. The texts further read, "Constant insults released from a malicious evil and vindictive c***!!!!! You know what’s far more hurtful than her venomous and degrading educational ranting??? Her hideously and purposely hurtful tirades and her goddamn shocking treatment of the man she was meant to love above all."

7. Depp also talked about Heard's ulterior motives in his texts to Dr, Kipper. He wrote, "Here’s the real deal mate…her obsession with herself is far more important. She is so f****** ambitious!!!! She’s so desperate for success and fame. That’s probably why I was acquired, mate. She has hammered me with what a sad old man has been I am … I’m so very sad."

8. Heard and her attorneys pointed towards text messages where Depp admitted to cutting the finger himself. When Dr Kipper was questioned about the text where Depp has admitted to doing so, he responded with, "I think that's what it said, yes." Dr Kipper also told the court that the Fantastic Beasts actor told the ER doctor he'd cut his own finger with a knife.

9. Dr Kipper was also questioned in the recorded video about where did he find Depp's severed finger after the incident took place. Dr Kipper clarified that Depp's chef found the severed finger in the kitchen and the house was covered in broken glass and blood. He also testified that he found Heard to be distressed but not injured and did not ask for medical attention.

10. Debbie and Dr Kipper also confirmed that they travelled to Depp’s private island in the Bahamas to assist with a detox programme back in August 2014. After August 2014, Dr Kipper also began to treat Heard.

11. During his questioning by Depp's lawyers, Dr Kipper also revealed that Heard never previously seeked treatment for domestic abuse related injuries. He also revealed that she did not seek treatment for any injuries caused by Depp. 

12. Kipper told the court that he "never" witnessed Depp physically abusing Heard or any such injuries.

SO WHAT'S NEXT: Johnny Depp is now all set to take the stand on April 19 in the ongoing defamation case. The actor will be facing a seven-person jury, Heard, lawyers from both sides and Judge Penney S Azcarate. A source close to Depp's team told Deadline that Depp will remain on the stand till April 20 for cross-examination.
